Greenhouse Construction Cost – It is one of the most important items that make up the greenhouse cost and you can say that there is no greenhouse without it. There are many factors that affect greenhouse steel construction costs. Now let’s write them in the order below;
- Greenhouse front facade columns – 80×120, 80×80 – 2mm, 2.5 mm, or 3 mm thick.
- Greenhouse side columns – 80×80 – 2mm, 2.5mm, or 3mm thick.
- Greenhouse inner columns – 80×80 – 2mm, 2.5mm, or 3mm thick.
- Greenhouse gutter – modern greenhouse gutter 50 x 2mm thick, round clip greenhouse gutter 48 x 1.6mm, 1.8mm, 2mm thick.
- Greenhouse condensation chute – A chute made of a 1.2 mm thick sheet, which prevents the droplets accumulated on the inner surface of the nylon from dripping onto the plant.
- Greenhouse ring spring (called top cap etc.) – It is used in 60×1.5mm, 50x60x1.5mm, and 48×1.5mm thicknesses.
- Greenhouse circle bottom pipe – It is used in dimensions such as 42×1.5mm, 42×1.2mm, 38×1.5mm, and 32×1.5mm.
- Greenhouse inner circle braids are used in sizes and thicknesses such as 32×1.5mm, 27×1.5mm, 27×1.2mm, 21×1.5mm, and 21×1.2mm.
- Greenhouse front wind support pipes are used in sizes such as 48×2,5mm, 48x2mm, 42×2,5mm, and 42x2mm. In each tunnel, 2 frontal middle pillars are connected to the upper part of the ring pipe, and 2 are connected to the upper part of the ring top pipe from the front columns, which are close to the groove.
- Greenhouse roof braces are used in sizes such as 38×1.5mm, 32×1.5mm, and 27×1.5mm.
- Greenhouse ventilation crosses are used in sizes such as 32×1.5mm, 27×1.5mm, and 21×1.5mm.
- Greenhouse side braces are used in sizes such as 48×2,5mm, 48x2mm, 42×2,5mm, and 42x2mm.
- Greenhouse inner crosses are used in dimensions such as 48×2,5mm, 48x2mm, 42×2,5mm, and 42x2mm.
- Greenhouse vibration pipe (the pipe connecting the bottom pipes of the circle, 2 or a single row in each tunnel) – It is used in dimensions such as 27×1.5mm, 27x1mm, and 21×1.2mm.
- Greenhouse roof ridge profiles – c45x1,2mm, c35x1,2mm, large clip U profiles are used.

- Bolts and Nuts – M8.8 quality M10 and M8 bolts and nuts, Steel look iron bolts, etc.
Greenhouse Construction Cost – Material Quality and Price Differences
The quality of the materials I have listed above comes to the fore in terms of their useful life. Today, many greenhouse growers use 80-gr galvanized materials, which are called market materials. In 80 gr galvanized coating material, there is 40 gr galvanized coating on each surface of the sheet. The market price of 80 grams of galvanized coating material varies between $ 1000 – $ 1100 on average. According to the thickness of the material, the more the thickness increases, the lower the price will be. Thicker material means a more affordable price per ton.
This price is the average price for February 2023. On top of this price, the cost of converting the galvanized coating sheet into a pipe or profile and the transportation cost is added. This cost is around $150-$160 per ton.
In addition, companies like us that prioritize quality use 275 gr galvanized sheet metal in their projects. The average price of 275 gr galvanized sheet is between $1250 – $1350. As I mentioned above, this is only the raw sheet price and on top of that, the costs of converting the raw sheet to profile, pipe, and transportation around $150 – $160 are added. We prefer materials made of 275 gr galvanized sheet metal (pipes used in the greenhouse, greenhouse gutter, fittings), that is, in places that do not come into contact with the soil.
We take the carrier columns of the greenhouse, that is, all the columns in contact with the soil, take the black material and bring them to the dimensions suitable for the greenhouse dimensions, and after making them suitable for use in the greenhouse, we send them to the hot dip galvanizing process. The average ton price of 2mm, 2.5mm, and 3mm thick profiles used in greenhouses today is around $950. The price of hot-dip galvanizing varies according to the thickness of the material but is between $420 – $550. In addition, transportation payments are made 2 or 3 times for these transactions. Shipping fees are around $30 per ton.
Another factor affecting the greenhouse construction cost is the ventilation number of the greenhouses. The average most efficient tunnel length is 80 meters. In other words, if you ventilate an 80-meter-long tunnel with a 1 0.37kW ventilation engine, you have used the ventilation engine with an efficiency of 85% – 90%. Double butterfly ventilation is often used in modern greenhouses. The length of the ventilation arms is 2 meters and is made of a 30x40x1.5mm profile.
The reason why greenhouses collapse in stormy weather or throw nylon
Today, in the greenhouses built in many provinces and different regions, situations such as the destruction of the greenhouse, the opening of the nylon, and the wear of the ventilation sections are encountered in mild windy weather, stormy days, and snowfall.
The reason why the greenhouse lies in the wind (storm) shows that the carrier columns are not built to withstand the wind conditions of the region. In order to keep the greenhouse cost low, minus tolerance (10%) material is used in all greenhouse construction materials. In other words, all the profiles used as 2 mm are 1.8 mm thick, all the pipes used as 1.5 mm are 1.35 mm thick, and the profiles used as roof ridge profiles are 1.08 mm thick. For these reasons, there are serious problems in greenhouses. The customer, on the other hand, generally prefers low-cost greenhouses and does not know what will happen to him in the future.
The reason why greenhouses throw nylon is due to the use of round clip profiles in the greenhouse gutter, roof ridge profiles, and ventilation ends. Round clip profiles, due to their structure, release the nylon they have compressed between them as time passes, and they come out from under the nylon clip in the slight wind.
In some projects, profiles with c35 segments (30x30x1,2mm) are used at the ventilation ends and under the ventilation. Since the profile is weak due to its structure in windy weather, it flexes and pulls out the plastic clip on it. In this way, the nylon pressed under it comes out. Therefore, in all of our projects, we use 45x45x1,2mm profiles on the roofs of greenhouses, at the ventilation ends, and under the ventilation. Yes, this increases our greenhouse cost, but it makes the owner happy by not letting the high-quality, user down under difficult weather conditions and not causing the vegetables in the greenhouse to die.
In addition, many of the greenhouse companies, while promoting their greenhouse construction systems, sell their greenhouses because they are resistant to 120 km/h wind, and are resistant to all kinds of storms. A wind of 120 km/h means a hurricane, that is, when the wind speed exceeds 119 km/h, it is considered a hurricane, and even the walls of many heavy steel structure buildings are blown off.
Greenhouse construction cost (February 2023)
Now let’s talk briefly about the cost of modern greenhouse construction on an m2 basis.
The gothic model greenhouse construction cost of a 60-acre (60.000m2) soilless tomato greenhouse is between $20-$23 per m2. This price does not include assembly labor and c25 concrete. The tunnel length is 270 meters, 23 tunnels, 4 sections are double ventilated, the height of the bottom of the chute is 5.5 meters, and it is covered with polycarbonate. It is only the steel construction material price. Covers are not included in the price.
The gothic model greenhouse construction cost of a 7,680 m2 soilless tomato greenhouse is around $22 per m2. This price does not include assembly labor and c25 concrete. In this project, the tunnel length is 100 meters, 8 tunnels, 1 section is double ventilated, the height of the bottom of the gutter is 5 meters, and it is covered with polycarbonate. It is only the steel construction material price. Covers are not included in the price.
The gothic model greenhouse construction cost of a 7,680 m2 soilless strawberry greenhouse is around $22 per m2. This price does not include assembly labor and c25 concrete. In this project, the tunnel length is 100 meters, 8 tunnels, 1 section is double-ventilated, the height of the bottom of the chute is 4 meters, and it is covered with polycarbonate. It is only the steel construction material price. Covers are not included in the price.
The gothic model greenhouse construction cost of a 960 m2 soilless tomato greenhouse is around $29 per m2. This price does not include assembly labor and c25 concrete. In this project, the tunnel length is 50 meters, 2 tunnels, 1 section is double ventilated, the height of the bottom of the gutter is 5 meters, and it is covered with polycarbonate. It is only the steel construction material price. Covers are not included in the price.
The gothic model greenhouse construction cost of a 480 m2 soilless tomato greenhouse is around $41 per m2. This price does not include assembly labor and c25 concrete. In this project, the tunnel length is 50 meters, 1 tunnel, 1 section double ventilated, the height of the bottom of the gutter is 5 meters, it is covered with polycarbonate. It is only the steel construction material price. Covers are not included in the price.
Conclusion (Greenhouse construction cost)
The reason why the prices differ from each other on the basis of m2 is due to the different construction structures and greenhouse areas. The prices given are the greenhouse construction price that is resistant to 100 km/h wind load. All of the carrier elements of the greenhouse are hot-dip galvanized and 0 tolerance materials are used. In addition, all non-welded galvanized materials are coated with 275 gr. All greenhouse roof profiles are c45x1,2mm 275 gr galvanized with segments. It is in the hands of the greenhouse owner to reduce the greenhouse construction cost. In order to reduce the cost, there are many more details other than the ones I mentioned above.
There are companies that use materials between 4.5 kg and 8 kg per m2 in modern gothic greenhouse projects made today. The weight of material used per m2 is of great importance. For this reason, what you buy for the money you pay and the quality of the material is important, not how much you pay for the m2 of the greenhouse.
